Did you know that water is one of the most amazing substance in the world? Our Earth is practically covered by 70-75% of water. That means, we have water in the form of ocean, natural springs, lake, etc than land on the face of the Earth. Another amazing fact is that the water that we have now, is the very same water that was believed to be brought onto the face of the Earth by meteorites millions of years ago. How is that possible? Well, the Earth is actually a closed system that is similar to a terrarium. In other words, it means that the Earth rarely loses or gain extra matter. Huge changes are rare. Our world, the planet Earth contains at least 326 million cubic miles of water, and scientifically, human can only use 003% of it. Most of the usable and consumable water comes from groundwater aquifers, rivers and freshwater lakes. There are a lot more fresh water in the underground than there is on the surface of the Earth.
It is interesting to note that water can dissolve more substance than any other liquids. When water travels, it carries chemicals, minerals as well as nutrient with it. Pure water, however contains only hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Water is represented in the periodic table as H2O. Which means, 2 part hydrogen and one part oxygen, and is neutral in nature. It's pH is 7. It is neither acidic nor alkaline in nature.
Just like our mother planet, the Earth, our body is also made of 70% of water. When we're just born, we have even more water in our body. The water in our bodies at birth is around 80%. Seeing how much water we're made of, it is understandable that water is very important when it comes to maintain a healthy body. Our body cannot function well without water. It is recommended for us to drink 8 glasses of water a day, but it is possible that human could consume about 3 gallons of water daily. Do you know what's nice about water? Water is everywhere. It's almost in everything that you drink or eat. It's in fruits, it's in veggies and many other things in our diet as well. Anyway, some drinks like coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine is mildly diuretic in nature, and caffeine prevents water from travelling to necessary locations in the body. Water, while essential for our bodily function and health, could be dangerous and harmful, especially if consumed too much, and too fast. It can caused water intoxication. Water actually dilutes the sodium in the body. Taken too much, and it'll dilute the sodium in our bloodstream, causing imbalance for the water in our brain. Generally, water intoxication is pretty common occurrence during intense athletic performance. Too much is not good... and so is too less. Not drinking enough water is also dangerous, because it will cause water retention in our body. Many may not know this, but by the time we feel thirsty, our body has already lost 1% of it's total water amount. Loosing fluids in the body also happens during weight loss after intense physical activities via sweat.
Facts about the consumption of water is really amazing. The U.S alone consumes 346,000 million gallons of fresh water daily, and nearly 80% of water is used for irrigation and thermoelectric power. Flushing the toilet takes alone takes up the largest amount of an average person's water consumption. Average person elsewhere uses 80-100 gallons of water per day, and out of this, about 85% of U.S residents receive their water from public or government facilities. The rest of the percentage took water from other resources such as private wells and whatnot. Amazing, isn't it? Water, water everywhere. It is abundant, but at the same time, it is also used massively.
